When it comes to determining if a circulation pump in a heat pump is defective, you can look out for the following indications:

1. Insufficient or no circulation: If you notice limited or no circulation of the heat carrier in the heating system, it may indicate a defective circulation pump. You may observe uneven distribution of heat in your home or certain areas of the radiators remaining cold.

2. Unusually high noise level: If the circulation pump starts generating unusually loud noises such as scraping, clicking, or rattling sounds, it could indicate a defective pump. This could be a sign of mechanical components being damaged or worn out.

3. Leakage or moisture around the pump: If you detect any leakage or moisture around the circulation pump, it could be a sign of a defective pump or malfunctioning seals. This can lead to inefficiency and require repair or replacement.

4. Pump does not start or does not stop: If the circulation pump fails to start when it should or does not stop when it should, it may indicate a faulty pump. There could be issues with the pump's electrical components, controls, or motor.

5. Increased energy consumption: If you notice a significant increase in energy consumption from your heat pump without any apparent reason, it could be an indication that the circulation pump is not functioning correctly. A defective pump can force the heat pump to work harder, resulting in higher energy consumption.

If you suspect that the circulation pump in your heat pump is defective, it is recommended to contact a qualified service technician or installer to inspect and diagnose the problem. They will be able to thoroughly examine the pump, perform necessary tests, and if needed, repair or replace the pump to restore the functionality of the heat pump.
